REVIEW – Loot Hero DX

Writer: Ashley Stuart-BorthwickAshley Stuart-Borthwick

Loot Hero DX is a very straightforward and simple game, but that's what makes it so fun to play.

Modern games getting bigger and bigger, with more complex systems and lores that can take hundreds of hours to scratch the surface and fully enjoy. While I love games like this and the showcase they provide as someone who has less and less time to spend playing games I sometimes struggle to find something I can pick up and jump into that I will enjoy right out of the gate. That hasn't happened with Loot Hero DX! Loot Hero DX was made by developer Varagtp and published by Ratalaika Games and recently released on all major consoles including Xbox. It is a 2D side-scrolling Indie game with a simple premise: Kill Monsters, Get Loot, Level Up, Repeat.

The game is made up of a variety of themed levels (woods, swamps, jungle, ice world, volcano etc) that you progress through on increasing difficulty. There isn't much in the way of controls, you move left or right automatically ploughing through enemies stopping to spend the mass of loot you collect at stores throughout each level. You start off with little minion level enemies and they get bigger as the level progresses up until you hit the boss at the end of each level and they are all themed around the world you are in. You work through all the levels to face the big bad dragon and beat him to save a miner and the loop starts again.

The game really focuses on the grind aspect to help you progress. Sometimes you may come to a level where you keep dying so the game pushes you into replaying areas to get more loot and XP to help you get stronger and faster. As you spend your loot on upgrades in the store your character gets new armour and weapons that help you get back into running through the higher difficulty levels.

As I kept progressing through the game I got my speed so high that if I wanted to I could sprint through levels in around 15 seconds, I was even too fast to kill one of the level bosses as I flew past him and had to run back! It's really hard to describe this game as its such a simple premise but its so satisfying to play. If you want to see it in action check out my gameplay below!

The game itself isn't long. You can easily mop up all the achievements in less than half an hour by playing through the first set of levels however, when compared to other easy achievement completion games I found myself actually wanting to play more and keep levelling up my hero instead of switching off and moving on to the next game, never looking back. This game may be an easier 1000G for those achievement hunters out there, but if you are wanting a cheap game that you can jump in and out of that's addictively fun then I highly recommend picking this up. There are also in game targets that make you want to keep playing to hit them (kill 10000 enemies, beat the dragon on the last level, hit level 100 etc) which add extra game time to enjoy.

If you are looking for a 2D retro inspired game, that is simple and fun then this is a game you need to try!

Total Score: 7/10
