High on Life - but from someone that’s actually played it.

I’ll kick things off by saying no, I am not a fan of Rick and Morty, and yes, I have actually finished the game, but this game is amazing.

So grab your psychotic sentient knife, talk to your sister and dive in.

This game finds the fine line between a great story, and engaging gameplay, and touches it inappropriately while making you watch.

The plot hole is your standard earth invasion, upto you to save them, it’s been done before, but this time it’s for a different reason, one you don’t find out until a bit later on, which to be honest makes the title a little confusing as you need to be around 70% of the way through.

Unlike your standard first person shooters, this one has one tweak which is on everyone’s minds, the guns, or ‘gatlians’ are living creatures who talk to you, and for all you other “reviewers” out there quit moaning, you can turn down the frequency all the way to silent. Although very VERY not safe for work, full of strong language, innuendo and a healthy dose of insults both to the enemies and you as a player, it’s hilariously entertaining. Maybe I’ve got the sense of humor as a child would but I found it funny and it broke the tedious exploration and backtracking.

Standard gameplay that anybody can turn into, altough D-pad down for crouch takes some time to get used to, the whole aim, look, jump and shoot are native to any shooter games, with various difficulty options to choose from, it’s available to anyone (except PlayStation players, whoops).

It’s colourful, wild and has way too much to explore, although the world itself is limited and small once you have all the available upgrades, I’m still managing to find myself discovering new things, whether it’s small jokes, Easter eggs or subtle hints about unexplored areas. There’s not too much that can be said about the game without giving too much away, but I will say it’s not perfect, the story is rather short, and only 3 real locations, it does seamlessly tie together into a fun game that’s perfect for killing time.

So whether you’re solving a pipe puzzle to help someone defecate into his friends mouth (that’s a genuine thing), carrying a vial of alien c*m (also a real thing) or seeing disembodied green horse genitals as a tv advert (again, this is not for the young ones) there’s always something new to discover. And if the chaos gets too much, sit back, relax, and watch a 1994 movie of Tammy and the T-Rex, where you can see a 21 year old Paul Walker in a crop top. That’s just 1 of 4 complete movies in the game.

Best game of all time? Hard no, it’s funny, and a great play, but it’s not the best thing in existence, nice for a while though. It is a shame it missed out on the game of the year awards, it wouldn’t of won all time, but it’s definitely worthy of some recognition, available now, on PC and Xbox, gamepass day 1 release

I look forward to seeing what Squanch Games will bring next, and if you fully explored the ending, you will be too.
