Atari hardware revenue collapses by 91%

Atari has released its half-year earnings for the fiscal year ending March 2023, showing a significant increase in total losses. The company reported a 91% decrease in hardware and "cartridge" sales, generating only 200,000 Euros ($197,174). This drop is attributed to the underperformance of the Atari VCS console in the retail sector, leading the company to suspend production of the console, with plans to resume manufacturing in 2023. Interestingly, Atari made more from blockchain (approx. 700,000 Euros) than it did from its video game hardware.

While games still make up the majority of Atari's revenues, with the company earning 2.8 million Euros ($2.71 million) from its Games segment, overall revenues for the half-year period were 4.3 million Euros, down from 6 million Euros last year due to the decline in hardware earnings. The company also incurred higher expenses in the general and administrative segment, leading to an increase in losses of 1.9 million Euros to a total of 5.1 million Euros.

Despite these challenges, Atari remains focused on its core gaming business and has secured a 10-year licensing renewal for the Roller Coaster Tycoon franchise. The company is also working on new titles in collaboration with external partners and plans to resume VCS manufacturing in 2023.
